Book Review

there there.jpg

There There by Tommy Orange
There, There features a cast of characters set on a collision course. Set in Oakland with events that lead to a final and devastating conclusion at the Big Oakland Powwow. The book spans generations of people of varying Native American statuses, all of them affected by the near genocide and displacement of their people. Beautifully written from varying perspectives and characters that demand your attention. This was a story that needed to be told and, more importantly, one that needs to be read.

Con Artist by Tom Fowler
This clever mystery novel is fun with layers of self-reflective comedy cleverly woven in with references that are delightful and show just how reality bending Comic Con as an event is. The hustle and bustle of San Diego Comic Con is amplified by comic artist Mike Mason's 'murder investigation' to clear his name after a rival is found dead. The problems don't stop there as Mike is forced to face his creative block, the cause of it, and the plight of creators within the comic industry.

Art Walk June 2018 - Johna Strader and M.A. Cortez

Join us June 7th for the Art Walk where we will have two authors: Johna Strader signing her book, When Paths Are Crossed and M.A. Cortez with The Sister Sleuths and the Shadow Man.

Johna Strader, When Paths Are Crossed

Shayna Harper is no stranger to the problems men can cause, so when she moves into a new apartment and Trey Monroe fails to respond in a timely manner to her maintenance concerns, it isn’t anything unusual. What is unusual is her reaction: not only forgiving him but letting her guard down enough to start dating him. Trey isn’t looking for another girlfriend, but when he meets the pretty girl who called about problems in her apartment, he uses free hockey tickets from his best friend to score a date with her, not expecting it to turn into anything serious. When it does, even he doesn’t realize the long-term impact. A relationship neither of them is looking for balloons around them, but the “hook-up high” wears off quickly, and Shayna finds that Trey’s problems with his kids and his ex-wife become her own. She hadn’t even wanted children; now, the instant family that came with Trey is threatening to overwhelm her, and she’s ready to throw in the towel and break it off with him. A routine doctor’s appointment reveals she’s pregnant, however, and the path Shayna thinks she’s on suddenly seems quite different, with her normally sharp sense of direction dulled by the awesome responsibility and decisions facing her. When Paths Are Crossed will remind you that we all have our individual journeys with their respective challenges, but sometimes, the roadblocks we encounter are ones we put there ourselves.

The thing about a secret is, it always comes back to haunt you… Sandy and Samantha may be twins, but sharing the same birthday is where their similarities end. It seems like the girls will never find common ground, until they stumble upon another set of siblings hiding secrets, lies, and shadows of the past.

Book Review

outoftheblue.jpg

Out of the Blue by Sophie Cameron

Jaya's mother is dead, her best friend and lover have disappeared, and winged Beings are falling from the sky. For Jaya, the last handful of months have been a series of events she has no control over. To top it off, her father in a Wingding, obsessed with the winged Beings that fall to their deaths and he has decided to uproot his two daughters to get to the next location where he thinks another fall will happen. Jaya is opposed to this idea and has little faith in his calculations until she witnesses the fall of a Being and discovers she survived. Now Jaya must decide what to do in the best interest of the Being, including involving a pair of siblings, Allie and Calum, who can help. As these three are thrown together by the same goals, Jaya and Allie become close even while the shadows of Jaya's past take shape.
Beautiful and flowing, the writing of this book creates full and kinetic scenes and characters that are hurt and courageous enough to change that.

Casper Art Walk Kickoff with Fred Jacquot

Casper_Art_Walk_Logo_2018_SEASON.png

We will have author Fred Jacquot with his book Wild Men on the North Fork: A Yellowstone Summer from 5-8 pm.
Come down, meet the author, get a book, and support local business!

Quote from Wild Men on the North Fork A Yellowstone Summer:
The Absaroka Mountains are, by land area, the largest range in Wyoming. Few Wyoming citizens could tell you this. As a range it lacks the spectacular peaks of the more famous Tetons. For vacationers, it is not nearly as popular as the Big Horns. One can count its lakes on two hands. This is an embarrassment when compared to the Wind River Range to its south. In the 'Winds' there is a lake over every hill, some ten thousand in all. But the Absarokas have their own special, rugged beauty and are probably host to as many wild animals as all the other Wyoming ranges combined. And they are rugged! Orrin and Lorraine Bonney, in their definitive book on the mountains of Wyoming, call the Absaroka Mountains the most rugged topographical area in the United States.

A day has not gone by since that time when she didn’t have a story floating around in her head. She is currently a full-time OB/GYN in Montana with her six rescue cats when she isn’t writing about the things that lurk in the dark.

Sam Dawson believes his life is at a crossroads, and brook trout will show him the way. Fishing the icy mountain streams of southeastern Wyoming is interrupted when fate challenges his life once more.

In this third Sam Dawson Mystery, the photographer and his daughter, Sidney, are on a hunt to find the truth behind what caused the death of an innocent little girl. Sam seeks to unravel the expanding mystery while exploring the boundaries of his complicated relationship with Annie George, his former girlfriend and now his publisher.

From the unique backdrop of the beautiful and turbulent foothills of Wyoming's Laramie range to the expansive prairies of the Nebraska Sandhills, Sam untangles the web that links the past with the present. Strange happenings in the isolated ranch house that Annie rents from a reclusive rancher, as well as competition for Annie's attention from a handsome animal behaviorist, threaten to deter Sam's investigation.

This month we will have K.D. Stewart signing her book.

Could it be that our delusions of the "perfect life" expose disillusion with our perfect God? K.D. Stewart poses that and other thought-provoking questions in Would I Really Marry My Cat?!--a fresh and compelling look at trusting God when His sovereignty confronts our self-focused ambition, hopes, and hurts. A raw and sometimes ridiculous exploration of faith, Would I Really Marry My Cat?! probes this simple yet profound truth: Life as a Christ-follower is not always a "charmed" life. It is a strategically-designed, intentionally-lived testimony of God's trustworthiness regardless of one's circumstances.

K.D. long dreamed of becoming a wife and a mom. One night her prince finally came. He looked at her with kind, devoted eyes and said, "Marry me." And she gleefully accepted his proposal--even though she knew he was a cat! It was easy for her to look past the whiskers and the tail. What mattered most was, for the first time in a long time, she experienced satisfaction deep within her heart. Then K.D. woke up ... and the morning light exposed something dark deep within her soul--disappointment in God and discontentment with the life He had given her. Out of this season of struggle, K.D. has drawn a series of stories, reflections, and prayers that will encourage, challenge, and inspire you to find joy-filled confidence in the God who created you and the life He has given you, even when it looks nothing like the life of your dreams.

We will have two authors here signing their books. Jesse Apland will have her book, A Summer Romance. And, Ron Franscell will be here with his new book, Crime Buff's Guide to Outlaw Los Angeles.

Los Angeles is where America’s dreams and nightmares got all tangled up. In this otherworldly place of seemingly everlasting life, death could have an otherworldly quality, too. In a city where anything was possible, even the ghastly could happen. Where else does a list of a city’s top five most recognized citizens include a mass murderer? Stand in the footsteps of Manson, the Hillside Strangler, the Night Stalker, the Black Dahlia’s killer, and the Onion Field slayers. Visit crime scenes where Hollywood’s weird history took fatal turns for O.J. Simpson, John Belushi, Ramon Novarro, Phil Hartman, Dorothy Stratten, Sal Mineo, and so many others.

New Book by Casey Rislov

Local author Casey Rislov has a new book out that we are excited to share with you. Keep an eye out for plans for Children's Book Week in May! Casey will be with us sharing her book and will have activities to do with the kids.

Imagination Cover.pdf.jpg

New book inspires children to create, discover, and dream of adventures as near as their own backyard

Once upon a time there were 4 friends-
2 bears, 1 moose, and a bluebird.
They stuffed their backpacks and planned their fun through a map they found.
They went on boat and a hot air balloon ride, found many strange creatures, and dug for treasure and dinosaur bones. Each spot on the map had a new adventure….
And it was in their own backyard! Their friendship brings many stories to tell for a lifetime.
And you thought they just brought backpacks.

This new children’s book Imagination Bigger Together, is a follow-up to her first title Time Together, Time Well Spent! Casey Rislov shares her words in a rhythmic form to catch young children’s attention. The same illustrator, Stephen Adams, shares his love of all things kids with hidden humor, lots of color, and creative action.

An excerpt from the book reads:
Imagination bring us together, stories, treasure hunts, travel, and laughter.
There is no limit to all we can see. One idea will lead to another.
Just imagine the places we will visit, all the more fun because we’re together.
So here we go!

Her 3 previous books have won several children awards each including Mom’s Choice Award, Living Now Awards, National Indie Excellence Award, and Los Angeles Book Festival Award.

Praise from the critics-

"Love is Forever offers comfort, hope and inspiration to those who have lost, or are facing the loss of, someone very dear. Love is Forever comes highly recommended for home and school libraries and for use in clinical settings for grief counseling."- Literary Classsics

“Casey Rislov is a recipient of the prestigious Mom’s Choice Award that evaluates products and services created for parents and educators and is globally recognized for establishing the benchmark of excellence in family-friendly media, products and services.”- Mom’s Choice Award

“Positive messages are reinforced, as well as the educational information being handed out to kids. Excellent job!” --Janelle Fila, Readers' Favorite

“It's rare to see a picture book about love that begins with easy admonitions that focuses on how to identify acts of love in the world and how to 'pay it forward' - but Open the Doors to You is such a read”- Midwest Book Reviews

Author: Casey Rislov has written three award-winning, internationally-sold books. This fourth book is a humorous and exciting follow up to Time Together, Time Well Spent! The imagination from this story has many ideas from Casey’s daily life. She finds inspiration in her husband’s “big fish” stories and she has 2 busy, creative boys who dig for worms and create loud music with most anything. Casey has a master's degree in elementary education and an endorsement in early childhood special needs. She spends her time reading books, writing, and sharing her enthusiasm with children.
